As leaders gather in Addis Ababa for the Internet Society’s 2025 Internet Development Conference, new data reveals a promising trend: Africa’s Growing Internet resilience is making significant strides. This report, released on January 20, 2025, highlights the continent’s advancements in digital infrastructure and connectivity.

The Pulse of Africa’s Growing Internet

According to the Internet Society’s Pulse Internet Resilience Index, Africa’s overall internet resilience score has increased to 34%. This marks a one percentage point rise from the previous year. Such improvements indicate more reliable access to essential online services, including education and healthcare, for millions across Africa. 

Africa’s developing internet resilience is not just a statistic; it represents a lifeline for many communities. Western and Middle Africa have shown the most substantial progress, each achieving a 2-point increase in their resilience scores. 

Countries like Zambia and Kenya have also made remarkable gains, with increases of 6 and 5 points, respectively. Uganda, Comoros, Madagascar, and Mozambique followed closely behind with 4-point increases. These developments underscore the commitment to enhancing Africa’s growing internet capabilities.

Factors Driving Resilience

Several factors contribute to Africa’s growing internet resilience. Increased investment in infrastructure plays a pivotal role. The expansion of mobile networks and collaborative efforts among governments, tech providers, and local communities are crucial. 

Since 2020, the Internet Society has facilitated the establishment of 16 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across Africa. These IXPs are vital for local traffic exchange, making the Internet faster and more affordable.

In a remarkable year for digital development, Africa is seeing steady progress toward connectivity.
