The achievement stems from the Nigerian Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS), a government-driven initiative to establish AI research in Nigeria rather than exporting talent abroad.
On the margins of GITEX Nigeria in Abuja on Monday, Olubunmi Ajala, National Director of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, told TechCabal;
“We discovered thousands of AI papers authored by Nigerians, but none tied to Nigerian institutions.”

Nigeria’s entry into the global AI conversation is no longer just a hope; it’s a reality demonstrated by these 20 cutting-edge AI research papers. Supported by NAIRS and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian academics and startups collaborated in 45 consortia, winning grants and working on targeted themes such as agriculture, healthcare, education, sustainability, and utilities.
The findings were in by August 2025: 20 peer-reviewed articles, two published in Springer journals, and a number of field-tested projects. One agricultural consortium detected “tomato Ebola,” a disease that destroys harvests, using YOLOv8 computer vision models. Another developed a smart traffic management system that uses an adaptive algorithm to allocate green light time based on actual traffic patterns, replacing Nigeria’s preset 60-second light cycles.
