The AI factory in Africa will serve as a high-performance data center powered by Nvidia’s cutting-edge GPU-based supercomputers. These facilities will provide advanced AI computing capabilities, enabling faster model training, fine-tuning, and inference. Cassava plans to deploy 12,000 GPUs across five countries—South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco—over the next three to four years. South Africa will host the initial rollout, with 3,000 GPUs installed by June 2025.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Hardy Pemhiwa, the president and group chief executive at Cassava, said,
“If we don’t take the first step to deploy our own capital, however limited it maybe, we can’t expect others to go first. This is about ensuring that Africa doesn’t get left behind.”
Benefits for African Innovation
The AI factory in Africa is designed to empower startups, researchers, and governments with localized AI infrastructure. By offering AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS), the factory will reduce dependence on foreign data centers and ensure data sovereignty. Key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, fintech, and energy stand to benefit significantly from this initiative.
Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and Chairman of Cassava Technologies, emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure: “Building digital infrastructure for the AI economy is a priority if Africa is to take full advantage of the fourth industrial revolution.”
